The creation of the federation of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on 2nd December 1971, is mainly attributed to the Late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, whose numerous achievements and deeds resulted in UAE prosperity and growth. During his reign, Sheikh Zayed launched an ambitious process of modernisation in accordance with international world-class best practices, and dedicated himself to optimising the country’s oil revenues for the benefit of UAE constituents. Moreover, he adopted collaborative and humanitarian positions on important international and regional issues. In recognition of his deep insight and achievements, he was chosen from among the world leading figures as the “Personality of the Year” in 1988.

Following his death in November 2004, he was succeeded by the hereditary emir, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who became the Ruler of Abu Dhabi, as well as the President of the United Arab Emirates. Keeping the company of his father since his childhood, Sheikh Khalifa was instilled with the art of leadership, politics and wisdom, in addition to a strong sense of Arabic morals.

Upon the directives of HH Sheikh Khalifa in November 2004, General Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan became the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi. He immediately assumed a wide range of political, economic and legislative responsibilities in the Emirate. In December 2004, he became the Chairman of the Executive Council of Abu Dhabi. Later on, he became the Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE armed forces.

The Emirate of Abu Dhabi is divided into three administrative regions: City of Abu Dhabi, the Eastern Region with Al Ain as its largest city, the Western Region, where Bida’ Zayed is the largest city.
